Though cash cow is first recorded as a slang expression in the 1970s, the term milch cow, meaning the same, dates back to 1424, according to the OED. Weekley mentions the Anglo-Saxon thri-milce, “the month of May when cows can be milked three times a day.” Certainly a time when cows can be profitable. See may. |
