pastrami; pistol. Pastrami is a highly seasoned, smoked shoulder cut of beef, its name deriving from the Rumanian pas- trama. U.S. deli workers may call pastrami pistol (“Pistol-shoot it all the way!”) because, as the New Dictionary of American Slang humorously suggests, the eater of a hot pastrami sand- wich “feels as if shot in the stomach soon after eating it.” |
