词汇 | gamp |
词源 | gamp; brolly. Gamp is a term for an umbrella, especially an untidy one, in England, but is rarely, if ever, used in the U.S. The word comes to us from Charles Dickens’s The Life and Ad- ventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (1843–44), in which the garru- lous and disreputable nurse Sarah Gamp always carries a bulky cotton umbrella. Her name is sometimes used for a midwife as well. Brolly, first recorded in 1873, is more commonly British slang for an umbrella today. |
