词汇 | also-ran |
词源 | also-ran. The joy may be in playing, not winning, but an also-ran means a loser, someone who competed but didn’t come near winning. The term is an Americanism first recorded (as also ran) with political reference in 1904, and derives from horse racing. The newspaper racing results once listed win, place, and show horses before listing, under the heading “Also Ran,” all other horses that finished out of the money. |
