词汇 | cakes and ale |
词源 | cakes and ale. Long before it became the title of Somerset Maugham’s novel, Cakes and Ale meant “fun or pleasant activi- ty,” as in “life isn’t all cakes and ale.” Shakespeare may have in- vented the expression, for he first recorded it in Twelfth Night (1600): “Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?” |
