number. Number derives from the Latin numerare, meaning the same. It is often forgotten that the word number, in addition to its common uses, can also refer to poems (poetry), verses, or metrical feet in a poem. Shakespeare, for example, uses number to mean poems in his 17th Sonnet: If I could write the beauty of your eyes And in fresh numbers number all your grace. See also retiring a number. |
