Sir, I have not yet begun to fight! During the famous battle between the Bon Homme Richard and the Serapis it seems that some of John Paul Jones’s men cried for surrender, but the cap- tain laid one of them low with the side of his pistol, fracturing his skull. Captain Richard Pearson of the Serapis then shouted to Jones, asking if he had had enough. Jones uttered the im- mortal words: “Sir, I have not yet begun to fight!” So Lieutenant Richard Dale later recalled. Jones himself claimed that he an- swered Pearson’s challenge with the far less colorful words “I have not yet thought of it, but am determined to make you strike.”
