词汇 | seventh-day adventists |
词源 | Seventh-Day Adventists. In 1831 New York farmer and preacher William Miller (1782–1849) founded the Protestant sect of Second Adventists, often called Millerites. Convinced from his reading of the Bible that the second coming of Christ would occur 12 years later in 1843, he spread his belief through- out America, attracting many followers who prepared for the end of the world and Judgment Day. When 1843 and then 1844 passed without his prophecy coming true, Miller founded the Adventist Church, whose name was changed to the Seventh- Day Adventists 15 years later. Numbering well over a million members today, their church observes Saturday as the Sabbath (as do Seventh-Day Baptists) and forbids the use of alcohol and tobacco. |
