词汇 bendigo australia
词源
Bendigo, Australia. The only city ever named for a prize- fighter is Bendigo, Australia, which has a population of some 50,000 and is the third largest sheep and cattle market in that country. Bendigo, the site of a famous gold strike in 1851, hon- ors the ring name of English pugilist William Thompson (1811–89), as does the bendigo fur cap popular in the late 19th century. Thompson was born the same year that Fighting Jim belcher died. He may have been one of triplets nicknamed Shadrach, Meshac, and Abednego, or his nickname could have stemmed from his evangelical pursuits, but, in any event, in 1835 he signed his first ring challenge “Abed-Nego of Notting- ham,” and used the nickname Bendigo for the remainder of his career—until he gave up fighting to become a full-time evange- list. Bendigo, Australia had some second thoughts about its eponymous name, changing it to Sandhurst in 1871, but revert- ed back to the old application in 1891, two years after Thomp- son’s death.
