rum. Called Kill-Devil, a West Indian name, by early colo- nists, and the basic liquor that they made (from molasses and sugar), rum possibly takes its name from the English rumbul- lion, first recorded in the 1640s, which may have been named for the town of Rambouillet. Another possibility is that it de- rives from the canting term rum, for “good, excellent,” which is recorded as early as 1567. |
