Margaret Armstrong and John Thornbec describe this striking American plant in their Field Book of Wild Flowers (1915): “The flowers of Yucca Whipplei, one of the most beautiful of all Yuccas, are of a lovely golden hue, glowing in the bright sunlight like lighted candles before the al- tar, and known as ‘Our Lord’s candle’ . . . After they have blos- somed the tall, white stalks remain standing for some time, so that the hills look like they have been planted with numbers of white wands.”
