ostrich; to hide one’s head in the sand. The largest living bird can weigh over 300 pounds and reach a height of eight feet. Unable to fly, it runs at high speeds when pursued, but it doesn’t hide its head in the sand, an attribute that inspired our saying to hide one’s head in the sand. Instead, it lies flat on the ground, making for a harder target, or thinking that it does. The emu and rhea are not true ostriches. See lark; war of the stray dog. |
