词汇 onion
词源
onion. Onion comes from the Latin word unio, “oneness” or “union,” in reference to the many united layers in an onion; the Romans used the same word for the multilayered pearl; thus our pearl onion would have been a Roman unio unio. On- ions were fed to the Egyptian laborers who built the great Cheops pyramid, dispensed by Alexander the Great to his troops to promote valor, and praised by General Grant, who once wired the War Department that he would not move his army farther without onions. The onion is believed by some to be an aphrodisiac as well as strength-giving, though as Shake- speare wrote, “Eat no onions or garlic, for we are to utter sweet breath.”
