词汇 | take the wind out of one-s sails |
词源 | take the wind out of one’s sails. To stop or slow somebody down. Pirate ships often sailed to the windward of a merchant ship, cutting off the wind blowing on its sails and slowing the ship down so that they could board. Later, the same technique came to be used in yacht racing and soon the term was being used figuratively. |
