词汇 | deadbeat |
词源 | deadbeat. Though deadbeat meant an exhausted, almost dead person at the beginning of the 19th century, by about 1863 it had become American slang for “a hobo or sponger rid- ing the rails.” The idea of hoboes not paying their way, riding trains free, inspired the present prevailing use of deadbeat for “someone who doesn’t pay his debts.” |
