elderberry. He who cultivates the elderberry, says an old prov- erb, will live until an old age and die in his own bed. Amazing properties have long been attributed to the wine and other prod- ucts made from Sambucus nigra. Said 17th-century English herbalist John Evelyn: “If the medicinal properties of the [elder- berry] leaves, bark, berries, etc., were thoroughly known I can- not tell what our countrymen could ail for what he would not find a remedy, from every hedge, either for sickness or wounds.” |
