词源 | earl. Any earl, third in rank among the British peerage, below a duke and a marquess, takes his name from the Old English eorl, “a man of position,” as opposed to a ceorl, or churl, “a free- man of the lowest rank.” A churl is today a peasant, a rude, surly person, and a miser. |
