词源	hair-raising. This Americanism came into the language too late, about 1910, for it to be associated with Indians or Indian hunters taking scalps. There is no evidence that horrible ac- counts of Indians or whites “lifting or raising hair” inspired the synonym for “frightening.” Most likely the term is a streamlin- ing of the old expression to make one’s hair stand on end.
