Green Book. The Green Book, with its 6,000 entries, is “The Social List of Washington, D.C.,” encompassing “socially ac- ceptable” Washington and official Washington, there being quite a distinction between the two. It was begun by Helen Ray Hagner in 1930 and is run by her granddaughter today. To get in it one has to be recommended by two people already there and approved by an anonymous board of governors. The book also serves as an arbiter of protocol. |
