The Great American Novel. This term sprang up toward the end of the 19th century. Frank Norris wrote: “The Great Amer- ican Novel is not extinct like the Dodo, but mythical like the Hippogriff . . . the thing to be looked for is not the Great Amer- ican Novelist, but the Great Novelist who shall also be Ameri- can.” Observed Jack London a little later: “I’d rather win a water-fight in a swimming pool, or remain astride a horse that is trying to get out from under me, than write the great Ameri- can novel.” |
