alkahest. The alkahest was the universal solvent of alchemy that supposedly dissolved anything, the word being coined from Arabic by the Swiss alchemist Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1490–1541), who also coined his own pseud- onym. This charlatan called himself Paracelsus, from the Greek para, “beyond,” plus Celsus, the name of a prominent first- century physician—thus advertising himself as beyond or bet- ter than the much esteemed Celsus! |
