Nuke is relatively new American slang for a nuclear weapon, being first recorded in 1964 in a Time magazine arti- cle, which discussed the possibility of using nuclear bombs to dig a new canal in Panama. Nuke as a verb, “to attack with nu- clear weapons,” is first recorded in a July 4, 1970 New Yorker in- terview with Eugene V. Rostow.
