Louis styles. Four decorative and architectural styles are named after French monarchs reigning when the styles were in vogue: Louis Treize style, for Louis XIII (1610–13): a peri- od characterized by a gradual transition from the rich free forms of the Renaissance to classicism in both architecture and furniture; Louis Quatorze style, after Louis XIV (1643– 1715): massive baroque designs that emphasized formality and dignity rather than comfort dominated here; Louis Quinze style, for Louis XV (1750–74): fantasy, lightness, ele- gance, and comfort are the main themes of this rococo peri- od, most interior decoration obsessed with a love of curved lines that was almost bizarre; Louis Seize style, after Louis XVI (1774–93): here occurred a reaction against the exces- sive designs of the Louis Quinze style, a return to straight lines, and the classic ideal in ornamental details. All of these styles had one thing in common: They emphasized richness and luxury, which is why they were swept out with the French Revolution.
