词源 | Louisiana. The Creole or Pelican State was named Louisi- ana in 1682 by the French explorer Robert de La Salle as a homage to the Sun King, France’s Louis XIV, applying the designation to the entire Mississippi Valley. The Louisiana Purchase, engineered by President Jefferson because he be- lieved Napoleon might close the Mississippi to United States commerce, brought the 1-million-square-mile area under American ownership in 1803 for a mere $15 million. In the history of this country only seward’s folly and possibly manhattan Island were shrewder real estate deals. The pur- chase included part or all of 11 states—Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Mencken notes there was a child named Louisiana Purchase to commemorate the event—but then the boy’s sister bore the name Missouri Compromise. |
