Evil One; Evil Empire; Evil Man Number One. The first is a term coined by President George W. Bush, or his speechwriter, for the terrorist Osama bin Laden after the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The younger Bush probably knew that the Iraqis had called his father, President George Bush, “Evil Man Number One.” Previous to this, be- ginning in 1983, President Ronald Reagan called the Soviet Union “The Evil Empire.” Long before both Bushes and Rea- gan, poet John Milton used the Evil One as a name for the Dev- il in Paradise Lost (1667). See axis of evil; the great communicator. |
