gillie suit. A camouflage uniform made by attaching dry grass and other vegetation to one’s clothing, allowing a soldier or a hunter to blend in with the environment. Sometimes used by snipers today, gillie suits were first worn by Scottish shep- herds to surprise thieves stealing from their flocks. These shep- herds were often young lads, “gillies” or “gillys” in Scotch Gaelic. |
