infernal machine. President John Tyler once had White House ushers defuse a package that he thought to be “an infer- nal machine,” or bomb, but that turned out to conceal a mere cake. Infernal machine has been synonymous for a bomb con- cealed as some harmless object since at least 1810, and in the form of infernal apparatus is recorded in 1769. The infernal in the phrase derives from the Latin infernalis, “of the realms be- low, or hell.” |
