词汇 ink
词源
ink; red ink; red numbers. Ink itself is from Greek enkauston, “burned in,” which the Romans used to describe the royal pur- ple ink used by Roman emperors. Red ink, dating back to about 1925, means a business loss (“He went into the red ink”) or a fi- nancial deficit, though during Prohibition it meant home- brewed wine. Red numbers, on the other hand, is a golf term that means to be under par by one or more strokes, as in “He’s in the red numbers,” something every golfer aspires to.
