词汇 | soul brother etc |
词源 | soul brother, etc. As a term for blacks used by blacks, soul brothers has been around since at least the 1950s. Today it is of- ten abbreviated, by blacks, as the brothers (or sisters) and fur- ther shortened to bro when used in a greeting. The meaning here is that blacks are alike in the soul, but in earlier combina- tions soul is used in many ways. Soul sharks were rapacious preachers, black or white, usually without a pulpit, and soul butter was a term for moralizing drivel, black or white, that Mark Twain popularized. Soul mate can be someone much loved, or even a mistress. Soul music and soul food (food like collard greens, black-eyed peas, hog maw, etc., associated with southern blacks) are also black terms dating back at least to the 1950s. |
