| 词源 | apples of Sodom. An old legend says that apple trees grown near the Dead Sea, “where Sodom and Gomorrah stood,” bear beautiful red fruit that falls to soot and ashes in the mouth. The gallnuts produced on apples by the insect Cynips insana are said to be scientific fact behind the legend, but the expression still means anything disappointing. |
