词源	Appleton layer. English physicist Edward Appleton (1892– 1965) discovered this upper region in the ionosphere that is 150 miles from Earth and part of the earlier discovered heavi- side layer. Appleton named the region after himself and was knighted for his discovery in 1941. Sir Edward won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1947.
