slip of the tongue.  This phrase, first recorded in the work of En­glish poet John Dryden in 1667, is a translation of the Latin lapsus linguae. The similar term slip of the pen isn’t heard much anymore, but freudian slip remains pop­u­lar. See goldwynism; malapropism; spoonerism.
