词汇 | mother of all |
词源 | mother of all; Mother of Parliaments; mother of all bombs. The phrase mother of all was overused at the time of the Persian Gulf war (1991) and is less often heard today. It was employed in constructions like the mother of all guns, the mother of all wars, the mother of all ships, etc. Mother, of course, has been used figuratively for centuries for the utmost or origin of any- thing, as in Mother of Parliaments, a British expression coined by John Bright in 1865. The moab is a fearsome U.S. bomb de- veloped at the time of the second Iraq War (Operation Iraqi Freedom) but not used in combat. The acronym stands for mother of all bombs. |
