词汇 | white cliffs of dover |
词源 | white cliffs of Dover. The white cliffs of Dover on the Kent coast of England only became white when a huge white ship the size of a mountain tried to pass through the Strait of Dover and scraped the cliffs that color in its passage, according to an- cient legend. Scientists have ruined a good story by establishing that the formation and color of the famous cliffs are due to Fo- raminifera plankton. The chalk cliffs have been a British patri- otic symbol at least since the World War II song by Nat Burton: “There’ll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover . . .” |
