motel. Most sources credit West Coast motor lodge owner Oscar T. Tomerlin with coining the word motel in 1930, To- merlin welding it together from motor hotel, which he had pre- viously called his place. But in her book Palaces of the Public, A History of American Hotels (1983) Doris E. King says that the word originated in 1925 with a San Luis Obispo, California es- tablishment that offered a garage with its roadside cottages and called itself a Mot-el Inn. See no-tel motel. |
