词汇 | molting |
词源 | molting. Molting is a process associated with growth that in- volves shedding an outer covering, such as feathers, skin, or shell, the word deriving ultimately from the Latin mutare, to change. A vivid example of molting is seen in the lobster’s shed- ding its hard inelastic shell. After feeding rapaciously, the crus- tacean lies on its side, and the membrane joining its body and tail splits across the back. Curling up into a V-shape, the lobster then begins working itself out of its suit of armor. It pulls its en- tire body through the narrow slit, including its claws, which must be drawn through openings only a 10th their size. The whole process takes from five to 20 minutes. With yet another skeleton of its old life behind it, the reincarnated creature crawls into a secure burrow until it grows heavier and its jellylike ar- mor calcifies. It must do this 10 times in its first year alone. |
