词汇 éminence grise
词源
éminence grise. Père Joseph (François Le Clerc du Trem- blay, b. 1577) was a Capuchin monk who became French car- dinal Richelieu’s personal secretary in 1612. Richelieu was the chief minister of France’s Louis XIII and both men were powers behind the throne. Père Joseph came to be called l’éminence grise, the gray eminence, not because of his gray hair but because of his gray Capuchin habit, which distin- guished him from the red-robed Cardinal Richelieu, who was called l’éminence rouge, the red eminence. These names were used derisively by their opponents but with the passage of time—not until the 1920s, so far as is known—Père Joseph’s nickname came to mean any eminent old person, such as an elder statesman, probably because the gray in gray eminence was associated with gray hair. It also means a person who wields unofficial power, often surreptitiously through another person.
