cracked; crack-brained. Cracked has meant “crazy” in En- glish since at least the 16th century and was indeed Standard English until about 1830, when it was labeled slang. But the ex- pression is much older than this, for a character in Aristo- phanes’s (ca. 448–ca. 388 b.c.) The Frogs is said to be cracked. A variant is crack-brained, first recorded in 1557. |
