词汇 fred karno-s army
词源
Fred Karno’s army; Arnie’s army. British music-hall per- former Fred Karno (1866–1941) led a troupe of slapstick come- dians in the early 1900s, Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel often performing with him. So popular was the erratic, disorganized troupe that the term Fred Karno’s army came to be applied dur- ing World War I to any company of green, untrained recruits. Arnie’s army is a name given by sportswriters to the many loyal fans who followed U.S. golfer Arnold Palmer (b. 1939), winner of four Master’s championships, as he played his way around the golf course.
