Congreve rocket. This is the proper name of the rocket used in 1814 during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry that inspired Francis Scott Key to write his poem “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which later became the U.S. national anthem. Before “the rocket’s red glare” at Fort McHenry it had been used as early as 1806. The rocket was invented by Sir William Congreve (1772–1828), who named it after himself. |
