An early 1900s Ameri- can saying meaning “not to judge things from surface appear- ances.” In writing a review of Stephen King’s Everything’s Even- tual: 14 Dark Tales (2002), New York Times critic Janet Maslin praised the jacket illustration by artist Mark Stutzman and turned the old saying around: “. . . a tranquil restaurant scene on the front cover with just a wee trace of blood in one water glass. But turn to the back, and all hell has broken loose. You can tell the book by its cover.” |
