Yo. Often used to indicate someone is “present” or “here,” es- pecially in answer to a roll call. This widely used U.S. expres- sion is often considered to be recent slang, but it can be traced back to 14th-century England. Yo can also be used like hey, to get someone’s attention, as in “Yo, John.” Other times it means “Here I am!” In this last case someone might call “John!” and John would call back, “Yo!” |
