词汇 | wolfsbane |
词源 | wolfsbane. This species of poisonous aconite, Aconitum vulparia, may have been called wolfsbane because meat soaked in its juices is poisonous to wolves. But it could have arisen through an involved etymological error, as explained by a 19th-century writer: “Bane is a common term for poi- sonous plants, and some early botanist translated it into the Greek kuamos, meaning bean. The plant has a pale yellow flower and was thus called the white-bane to distinguish it from the blue aconite. The Greek for white is leukos, hence leukos-kuamos, but lukos is the Greek for wolf, and by mistake got changed to lukos-kuamos (wolf bean). Botanists, seeing the absurdity of calling an aconite a bean, restored the origi- nal word bane but retained the corrupt word lukos (a wolf) and hence we get the name wolf ’s bane for white aconite.” See also aconite. |
