wheel. I remember my father telling me to get my wheel out and we’d go for a ride. This synonym for a bicycle isn’t heard much any more—at least I haven’t heard it in years—but it is recorded as far back as 1880, probably suggested by the large front wheel of early bicycles, or, less likely, by unicycles, which date back 20 years or so earlier. There was, in fact, a bicycle manufacturer called the Chicopee Overman Wheel Company, which is also remembered in sports history for making the first basketballs at a time (about 1894) when soccer balls were being used in the infant game.
