词汇 | sardoodledum |
词源 | Sardoodledum. French playwright Victorien Sardou (1831– 1908) was born to great wealth, but when his family lost its for- tune, he descended into poverty he could not have imagined. Sardou was found near death of typhoid fever in a garret, cov- ered only by a pile of rejected play manuscripts. The woman who found him nursed him back to health, and he later mar- ried her. He became one of the most successful playwrights of his day, writing many vehicles for Sarah Bernhardt, but his well- made, often contrived, shallow plays led George Bernard Shaw to coin the word Sardoodledum for such dramas. |
