词汇 | man on the horse |
词源 | man on the horse. We know that this expression meaning “the person in authority or in charge” is an Americanism, but it is first recorded in England. In 1887 a British newspaper writer noted: “The man on the horse . . . to use the picturesque Amer- ican phrase, is not now Lord Salisbury.” No doubt the expres- sion dates back at least 20 years earlier, perhaps to Civil War days. |
