A man made of straw would cer- tainly be one without a heart or conscience, so that this expres- sion is apt for “an unscrupulous person who will do anything for gain.” However, the words may refer to real “straw men,” who in the past loitered near English courts with a straw in one of their shoes—this indicating that they would be willing to give false testimony or swear to anything in court for enough money. |
