The laconic words of Julius Caesar when he told his friend Amintius of his victory over Pompey’s ally Phar- naces at Zela in 47 b.c., the phrase is Latin for “I came, I saw, I conquered.” So Plutarch says, but Suetonius doesn’t ascribe the words to Caesar, noting only that they were displayed before his title after his victories at Pontus.
