词汇 richter scale
词源
Richter scale. A 0 to 9 open-ended logarithmic scale that in- dicates the intensity (the amount of energy released) of an earthquake. The scale is named for U.S. geologist and seismolo- gist Charles Francis Richter (1900–85), who devised it in 1938 at the California Institute of Technology. The most destructive earthquakes register over 5.5 on the scale, every difference, from 1 to 2, for example, representing about a 32 fold differ- ence in magnitude. According to the Guiness Book of World Records (1998), “The largest reported magnitudes on the Rich- ter scale, are about 8.9, but the scale does not properly represent the size of the very largest earthquakes . . .” For these another rating system should be used. The deadliest earthquake known to history occurred in three Chinese provinces in 1556, claim- ing 830,000 lives. In 1976 another Chinese earthquake killed 750,000 people. Actually, the Richter scale should honor both Richter and his colleague Dr. Beno Gutenberg (1887–1960), who worked with him in developing it. But the term Guttenberg- Richter scale is rarely heard today.
