词汇 | damn with faint praise |
词源 | damn with faint praise. Alexander Pope invented this phrase when satirizing the scholar and author Joseph Addison as Atti- cus in 1723. The full paradox is seldom quoted anymore but Pope wrote that “Atticus” would: Damn with faint praise, assent with civil leer, And, without sneering, teach the rest to sneer. |
